During the packaging process the existing automation was sucking up airbags when trying to lid the cartons. To resolve this, the employees were attempting to seal the top of the boxes with tape which caused a further problem of the boxes not being folded to size by the case sealing machinery. This left the boxes with no void fill, leading to damages and a negative customer experience.
Ranpak Geami, a paper based void fill solution was suggested as a replacement for the airbags. Because the airbags are no longer sucked into the machine, the cartons can be cut to size avoiding excess space and void fill volume. The sustainable paper option saves over 30% in costs, reduces time whe packing, and is a better shock absorber to reduce damages.
A time/cost analysis was completed on several different parcel sizes to compare the paper solution vs plastic airbags. Not only did the paper option reduce the cost of void fill by over 30%, it also reduced packing times by 40%.

"By carefully analysing the packaging time and cost of the voidfill, we were able to suggest a sustainable solution that not only solved the client's issue of airbags being sucked into the machinery, and reduces damages; the kerbside recyclable solution sees a redution in costs and the time spent packing."
