It’s not every day that a monarch is crowned, so to mark the monumental occasion of the coronation of King Charles III in style, we chose to create a celebratory pop-up card depicting the 700-year-old Coronation Chair! The card is also a showcase for the cardboard engineering suitability of Invercote® Creato, a two-sided coated Solid Bleached Sulphate (SBS) board, with smooth surfaces tailored for the printing of sophisticated images. The pop-up mechanism brings to life Invercote Creato’s features and benefits in a fun and demonstrative way.

Invercote inspired coronation card - Our creative thought process

Seeking a subject that would represent the coronation and mark this historical event, but also show what can be achieved with cardboard engineering, we explored possibilities with project partner Inkmark. The Coronation Chair, also known as St Edward’s or King Edward’s Chair, was not only a highly symbolic part of the recent coronation but also carries a wealth of history; dating back to 1296, it has witnessed the crowning of 26 monarchs.

Perhaps surprisingly, cardboard engineering, albeit in a rather more primitive form, dates back to roughly the same period. The first known pop-up, or ‘movable’, book was created by Benedictine monk Matthew Paris in his Chronica Majora, which covers a period beginning in 1240 [source: Wikipedia]. A pop-up therefore seemed quite a fitting tribute.

Cardboard engineering has been growing in popularity over recent years, driven in no small part by paperboard’s high sustainability, both in its production and its recyclability. Cardboard engineering, both simple and complex, is increasingly being used in the production of bespoke packaging and retail display and is an effective way to “wow” consumers - but of course the right paperboards must be chosen for impressive performance and optimum foldability, without cracking.

The design and engineering process

We worked with our highly experienced cardboard engineering partners, Inkmark, to develop the design. Several prototypes were produced to not only ensure a smooth operation, but also so the templates could allow for the creative design elements of the messaging included in the card. Adjustments were made accordingly so everything would be straight forward for the production and hand finishing of this ‘standout’ piece and the fold of the chair was perforated to aid the folding mechanism.

Why Invercote® Creato? It was important that the material chosen had just the right amount of flexibility for the smooth operation of the paper engineering mechanism, and the correct strength and thickness to give the quality, tactile feel worthy of the event. Invercote Creato was chosen for its many advantages over other, similar products. While many SBS boards are mono-layered, Invercote Creato is multi-layered, which gives it the strength and rigidity required for cardboard engineering. It is also available in 240gsm/260mic, which allowed us to make the folds required for the pop-up mechanism. Invercote Creato also has great resistance to cracking, which is a must-have when folding and creasing paperboard.
