AIDA sustainability project overview

Imageco LTD, a leading wide-format printing company, was approached by the design agency PIE Factory to create and develop a sustainable events solution for their client: Capital One. Together, the teams developed a 8x4m fully sustainable, recyclable and reusable greenhouse, entirely free from plastics.

Using Xanita board – an engineered fibreboard manufactured from fibres recovered from recycled cardboard boxes - the project team successfully created an appropriate structural design that stands the test of time whilst also ticks the sustainability boxes. Each green expectation…on a tight deadline. The stand has already been reused three times and will eventually be recycled at the end of its life.

The jury recognised the sheer commitment of all stakeholders involved and the ability to deliver on high environmental and operational expectations. The stand, and the ethos behind it, provide an important template for the design and build of future sustainable exhibition stands.

A dream team, for the better.

How did you come to compete for this award?

The project was impressive and made great use of Xanita board so I thought it would be worth a shot.

What makes this initial brief particularly special and challenging?

The brief was complex and challenging due to the physical design and the technical restraints of Xanita. Clever engineering had to be used with little time for research and development.

How central was the question of eco-responsibility?

This was at the epicentre, our client came to us after seeing the previous project for Antalis and their Sustainability Street expo stand. They wanted their project produced the same way using the same material, Xanita.

What were the main challenges to overcome?

Timings were tight and we had to engineer a solution that was fit for purpose, safe and to a high standard.

What reception did this eco-designed stand get?

I was at the show for install and it was the best stand there, it stood out a mile from other basic stands and received lots of reconition during and after the show.

What was the key success factor of this whole collaborative experience?

The whole creative process from start to finish was team work. We all came together to deliver the project on time. Our Cad designer Dean only finished building it in Leeds 6 hours before the show started, he came on a train with me the following morning to then install it all day. A real huge effort by all. The material properties of Xanita made it possible to do and we knew that we could work with this material to bring the idea to life.

What does it mean to you to get this award?

It means the world, to get global recognition for our projects is amazing.

What are you looking forward to in 2023?

More of the same, pushing the boundaries of what we can do and letting our creative minds run riot.
