Coated Paper

Coated paper is designed with a material coating that restricts ink absorption, allowing for a smoother, more refined finish. This coating creates a sealed surface that enhances the paper’s appearance and durability, making it a popular choice for a wide variety of printing needs. At Antalis, we offer a diverse selection of coated papers available in different weights, or grammages, suitable for both digital and offset printing processes. With our range, you’ll find options tailored to help achieve crisp, professional results.

What are the primary uses for coated paper?

Thanks to its smooth surface, using coated paper helps any image or use of colour on the page look sharp and vibrant. One of its primary uses is for photographic prints, which can be great for things like brochures or magazines, where high resolution photographs are necessary. Additionally, woodfree coated paper can be used in both offset and digital printing, making it a versatile and convenient option.

Alternatively, if you do have a digital printer, you may want to stock up on digital specific coated paper. This type of paper has been optimised for digital printing, meaning it has excellent colour reproduction, opacity and runnability. It works well for a range of uses such as annual reports, books and catalogues.

What types of finishes are available for coated paper?

There are a number of different finishes available for coated paper, so you can choose the one that best suits your preferences. The coating of gloss paper has no visible texture but offers a very smooth and shiny finish to the paper. This kind of paper is typically used for advertising materials as it creates a high colour contrast and is more likely to grab the attention of any potential customers.

If you’re looking for something less shiny, silk, satin & matt finishes can also work very well. Matt paper is the least glossy coated paper option so is often used as an alternative to uncoated paper. It only uses a small amount of coating so has a non-glossy appearance with zero shine. This does mean it’s fairly easy to write on and won’t create glare when it catches sunlight so is great for booklets or photobooks.

Silk and satin finishes are both somewhere between matt and gloss. Satin tends to have a little bit of gloss in printed areas, leaving unprinted areas matt. Silk on the other hand has a light coating of gloss across the entire surface. Either of these can be a good middle ground, allowing for a bit of shine without the glare.

Can coated paper be recycled?

Put simply, yes. Coated paper can be recycled along with uncoated paper products, whether it’s used for magazines, brochures or even posters.

Novatech Matt is a high-quality, two-sided coated paper is certified by both the FSC (Forestry Stewardship Council) and the PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification), making it a reliable choice for environmentally conscious printing. Novatech Matt is 100% recyclable, providing businesses with an option that aligns with their sustainability goals without compromising on quality.

Choosing coated paper for your projects not only adds a professional look and feel but also supports recycling and environmental responsibility, ensuring that your materials leave a positive impact on your audience and a minimal one on the planet.
