What are ICC profiles?

ICC profiles - also known in the industry as colour profiles - are an essential aspect of colour management in digital imaging and printing. The common abbreviation ‘ICC’ stands for the International Color Consortium. This is the organisation responsible for establishing and maintaining the standards when it comes to licensing the use of colour profiles.

The primary purpose of ICC profiles is to ensure consistent and accurate colour reproduction across a range of different devices. This includes everything from TV and computer monitors and cameras to printers, scanners, and photocopiers. Naturally, every device has its own unique colour capabilities and gamuts - that is, the full range of colours it can reproduce. As these can vary significantly from one device and/or brand to another, ICC profiles are there to ensure that the colours that are ultimately printed or displayed exactly match those intended by design or those captured when a photograph is taken.
